Magufuli opens Kigamboni longest cable-stay bridge in EA

President John Magufuli today opened the longest cable-stay bridge in East Africa in Kigamboni and proposed it to be named after Nyerere—the Father of Nation.

The president said, though the power of naming national statutes is under ministerial capacity, but he said it would be ideal to name the bridge Nyerere for his outstanding leadership.
Mr President urged ‘wananchi’ to protect the bridge and other infrastructures which were constructed using huge taxpayers’ monies.
The cable–stay bridge is 680 meters long and took some four years to construct using internal funds under Public Private Partnership (PPP). NSSF contributed some 60 per cent while the government 40 per cent.
Mr president Magufuli said that the sea cross bridge will not only stimulate the economy to people of Dar es Salaam but also of Tanzania as whole.
He also congratulated former president Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete and the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) for the commitment and the efforts on the construction of the multi-million Kigamboni Bridge.
The 680 meters long cable-stayed bridge is not the longest bridge in Tanzania. That fete goes to ‘Mkapa Bridge’, which is almost a kilometer long and Unity Bridge that connects Mozambique and Tanzania is the second longest at 720 meters.
